About Antalya
Antalya is a vibrant city located on Anatolia’s southwest coast, bordered by the majestic Taurus Mountains and overlooking the Gulf of Antalya. As the largest city on the Turkish Riviera, also known as the Turquoise Coast, Antalya stands out for its unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and cultural heritage. The city was founded in the 2nd century BC by Attalus II Philadelphus of Pergamon and has since witnessed a dynamic history, changing hands between Romans, Byzantines, Seljuqs, and Ottomans, and even experiencing a brief Italian occupation after World War I before returning to Turkish control in 1921.
The old town of Antalya, Kaleiçi, is surrounded by ancient fortified walls and perched on a low cliff above the harbor, offering visitors a glimpse into its storied past. Among the city’s must-see attractions are Hadrian’s Gate-a striking Roman-era marble portal built in honor of Emperor Hadrian-, the iconic Yivli Minare Mosque with its fluted minaret, and the Roman Fortress (Hıdırlık Kalesi), which provides panoramic views of the coastline. Other highlights include the Iskele Mosque, Karatay Medrese, the lively Yat Limani (marina), Tünek Hill, and the scenic Düden Waterfalls.
Nature lovers will appreciate the dramatic backdrop of the Taurus Mountains, a 2,000-kilometer chain that arcs around the city and is home to diverse flora and fauna, as well as numerous valleys, lakes, and plateaus. The region’s Mediterranean climate, golden beaches, and proximity to ancient sites make Antalya a premier destination for both relaxation and exploration. Today, Antalya is not only the chief resort on the Turkish Riviera but also a gateway to the rich archaeological and natural wonders of southwest Turkey.
